What is data governance?

Data governance is the rules and responsibilities that decide who owns a set of data, who may use it, how accurate it has to be and when it is deleted.

Where this one gets misread

Governance questions get answered with a policy document. The operational answers are configuration, not policy. Who may see what, how long it is kept and what happens on deletion can all contradict the written policy without anyone noticing.

Questions to ask

Ask for a worked example on your own material, and the evidence needed to reproduce it.

Where does the data physically sit?
Who at the vendor can reach it, and under what process?
What is the deletion path, and how is deletion proven?
Which decisions are logged?
